This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step walkthrough to safely unlock your bootloader and root your Nexus device. Prerequisites Before You Start

Before plugging in your phone, you must prepare both your computer and your mobile device to ensure the process runs smoothly.

Back up your data: Unlocking the bootloader completely wipes your device. Save your photos, contacts, and important files to a cloud service or your PC.

Enable Developer Options: Open your phone’s Settings, go to “About Phone,” and tap “Build Number” seven times until a message says developer mode is active.

Turn on USB Debugging: Go back to Settings, open “Developer Options,” and toggle on “USB Debugging.”

Enable OEM Unlocking: In the same Developer Options menu, turn on “Enable OEM Unlock” if the option is available for your specific model.

Charge your battery: Ensure your device has at least 60% battery life to prevent it from powering off mid-process. Step 1: Download and Configure the Toolkit

The Nexus Root Toolkit automates the complex command-line steps, but it requires the correct initial setup to communicate with your phone.

Download the latest version of the Nexus Root Toolkit from the official WugFresh website onto your Windows PC. Install and launch the application.

Select your exact device model and current Android build version from the drop-down menu when prompted. If you are unsure, look under Settings > About Phone on your device.

Click “Apply” to let the toolkit download the specific factory images and files required for your phone. Step 2: Configure the USB Drivers

Faulty drivers are the most common reason rooting attempts fail. NRT includes a built-in utility to fix this.

Click the “Initial Setup” button on the toolkit main menu, then select “Full Driver Installation Guide.”

Follow the step-by-step instructions to uninstall any old Android drivers.

Your phone will reboot into a black screen with an Android logo. Use the physical volume keys on your phone to highlight “Yes,” and press the Power button to confirm the unlock.

Wait for the process to finish. Your device will reboot into the factory setup screen. Pass through the basic setup wizard and re-enable USB Debugging in the settings. Step 5: Root Your Device

With the bootloader unlocked, you are now ready to apply the root permissions. Reconnect your phone to the PC and ensure it is detected. On the NRT interface, locate the “Root” section.

Check the box that says “Custom Recovery” (this installs TWRP, which allows you to flash custom mods later). Click the “Root” button.

The toolkit will automate the remaining steps, flashing the recovery image and installing the root files (such as Magisk or SuperSU). Your device will reboot automatically once completed.

To confirm the process worked, open your phone’s app drawer and look for the root manager app, or download a free “Root Checker” app from the Google Play Store to verify your superuser access.
